BIOGRAPHY
Guillermo Martí Ceballos was born in Barcelona in 1958. The son of the landscape painter Oriol
Martí Valls (a distinguished pupil of the Valencian painter Juan Baptista Porcar and of Emili
Bosch Roger), he received his first instruction in drawing and painting from his father at an early age.
In 1983 he enrolled at Escola Massana in Barcelona, where he studied Graphic Design. He excelled
in drawing and composition and, encouraged by his teacher, the painter Ramón Noé, devoted himself
intensively to the study of these disciplines.
In 1986 he joined the painting studio of the artists Boter and Santaló, consolidating his academic
training. After an initial Impressionist phase, he began exploring purer colour and greater expressive
freedom. He discovered the work of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, followed by the Fauvism
of Henri Matisse and André Derain, and later the German Expressionists, including August Macke
and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. His palette underwent a profound transformation as local colour
gradually gave way to a purer and more expressive use of colour.
In 1987 he became a member of the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc, where he produced numerous
studies from life, particularly of the female nude. Since then, he has remained committed to this
discipline, which has provided an enduring source of inspiration and visual material for his later
studio work.
Alongside his career as a graphic designer and illustrator, he participated in several group exhibitions,
including an exhibition at Palau Robert in 1996, and received a number of awards for poster design,
including prizes for the Festa Major de Gràcia and the Carnaval d’Arenys de Mar.
In 2000 he held his first solo exhibition in Barcelona at Galería Kreisler, achieving considerable
critical acclaim and commercial success. Since then, he has continued to exhibit regularly in various
galleries.
In 2001 he was awarded the Second Prize for Painting at the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc (Isidre
Nonell Medal), followed in 2004 by the First Prize for Drawing at the same institution.
His work is held in private collections throughout Spain and in countries including the United States,
Mexico, France, Ireland, and Austria.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I see painting as a language capable of expressing what words can scarcely explain. My work always
begins with the observation of nature, yet it does not seek to reproduce it faithfully. The subject is
merely the point of departure for a new reality constructed through colour, form and composition. As
Paul Gauguin observed, the artist should not copy nature, but rather take from it the elements with
which to create a new one.
My work is rooted primarily in figurative painting, although it occasionally approaches abstraction. I
am far more interested in how a painting is made than in what it depicts. The subject itself is of
secondary importance; what truly matters is the way in which the language of painting transforms
reality into emotion. Colour ceases to describe the visible world and instead responds to an inner
perception. Altering the local colour of nature does not mean moving away from it, but rather moving
closer to a deeper truth, where chromatic relationships, however free they may become, always retain
their harmony.
The human figure, and particularly the female face, occupies a central place in my work. Sometimes it
arises from direct observation, at other times from the imagination. I do not seek portraiture as a mere
likeness, but as a pictorial construction in which colour, form and rhythm convey an inner presence
rather than a physical description.
II regard beauty as a purely pictorial quality, independent of the subject represented. A landscape, a
portrait, or any other subject need not conform to conventional ideals of beauty in order to become a
beautiful painting. The beauty I pursue arises from the harmony of colour, rhythm, composition and
expression; from the pictorial structure of the work rather than from the nature of its subject. My aim
is for every painting to achieve a balance between intuition and reflection, between the spontaneity of
gesture and the discipline of craftsmanship.
I firmly believe that drawing, composition and the mastery of colour are the fundamental pillars of
painting. Yet technique acquires meaning only when it serves a personal vision capable of moving the
viewer. A painting should possess the strength to communicate through its own visual language,
without relying on explanations or interpretations beyond the work itself.
The essence of art lies in conveying sensations and emotions through pictorial beauty, rhythm,
chromatic harmony and composition.
In art, I believe only in what moves me.
